The county assessor has the responsibility to appraise and assess the real and personal property within the county for the purpose of ad-valorem taxation. Also, the county assessor is required to compute the ad-valorem taxes due on all the taxable property. By law, the county assessor appraises all the taxable real property according to its fair cash value for which the property is actually being used as of January 1 of the taxable year, and assesses it at no more than 35 percent of its fair cash value.
In 1987, Jackson County was one of the first counties to implement computerization of assessment and tax rolls. The Assessor’s office currently has cadastrial mapping, as well as, CAMA (computer assisted mass appraisal) systems to better serve the needs of Jackson County citizens.
